Over the next four years the analogue television transmitters will be shut down region by region until the whole of the UK is receiving digital television.
This means that televisions without digital set-top-boxes or built-in FreeView tuners will not be able to receive any television channels.
The shutting down of the analogue television transmissions and the move to digital is one of the biggest changes in television in the UK since the introduction of colour in 1969.
The switchover to digital brings many features not available with analogue:-
- Improved Picture Quality
- True Widescreen Transmissions
- Greater Range of TV Channels
- Digital Radio Channels
- Electronic Programme Guides
- Red Button Interactive Services
- Subscription Channels
The Copeland analogue transmitter has already been switched over (0ctober 17 – November 14 2007).The next region will be the Boarders region phasing out (November 08 – June 2009)
